Hunting Tests were designed to evaluate the abilities of various pointing breeds of dogs by judging their performance while pointing and retrieving, against an established standard of perfection.  The AKC Hunting Test Rules require dogs to be judged while simulating hunting conditions as closely as possible.

Hunting Tests are non-competitive.  Dogs who earn qualifying scores may achieve Junior Hunter (JH), Senior Hunter (SH), and Master Hunter (MH) Titles, with each successive title requiring more skill and training.

During Hunting Tests dogs are handled on foot, as horseback handling is prohibited.
